What Does It Mean to Follow Jesus? Understanding True Discipleship - Glenn Lambertz

When Jesus said "follow me," what did He really mean? This fundamental question lies at the heart of Christian faith and discipleship. Understanding what it means to follow Christ goes far beyond simply believing in Him—it involves a complete transformation of life and purpose.

The Good Shepherd's Voice

In John 10:14-30, Jesus provides profound insight into what following Him truly means. He declares, "I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep and my sheep know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father, and I lay down my life for the sheep" (John 10:14-15).

The phrase "I am" is particularly significant. In Jesus' time, claiming to be "I am" was tantamount to claiming divinity—something that would typically result in death by stoning. Yet Jesus repeatedly used this phrase, demonstrating His divine nature and authority.

What Does It Mean to Be His Sheep?

Jesus explains that His sheep have specific characteristics: "My sheep listen to my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand" (John 10:27-28).

This relationship involves:

  • Listening to His voice
  • Being known by Him personally
  • Following His lead
  • Receiving eternal life
  • Being secure in His protection

The Gospel Message: The Foundation of Following

Before we can follow Jesus, we must first understand and accept the gospel message. God visited this planet in the person of Jesus Christ to show us who our God is, to suffer and die as the just penalty for our sin, and to make eternal life available to all who believe.

Jesus "was raised from the dead after three days in the grave, met with his disciples and many others after the resurrection, then ascended to sit in his rightful place at the right hand of God."

Have You Said Yes to Jesus?

Following Jesus begins with a personal decision to accept Him as Lord and Savior. This isn't just a one-time event—even longtime Christians benefit from regularly reaffirming their commitment to Christ.

What Following Jesus Looks Like Daily

The Apostle Paul provides practical guidance for following Christ in Colossians 2:6-7: "So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness."

Living by the Spirit

Paul also instructs in Galatians 5:16: "So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature." Following Jesus means allowing His Spirit to guide our daily decisions and actions.

Setting Our Hearts on Things Above

In Colossians 3:1-2, Paul writes: "Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things."

This doesn't mean we ignore earthly responsibilities, but rather that our primary focus and values align with Christ's kingdom rather than worldly pursuits.

Taking Up Your Cross Daily

Jesus made the cost of following Him clear in Luke 9:23: "Then he said to them all: 'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.'"

Taking up your cross daily means:

  • Denying selfish desires
  • Accepting the burdens and challenges that come with following Christ
  • Trusting that Jesus will carry these burdens with you
  • Making this commitment fresh each day

How Do We Listen to Jesus' Voice?

Jesus promises that His sheep listen to His voice, but how do we hear Him today? We listen through:

Scripture

God's written Word contains the recorded teachings and words of Jesus. Regular Bible study helps us recognize His voice and understand His will.

The Holy Spirit

When we invite Christ into our lives, His Spirit comes to dwell within us. The Holy Spirit guides, convicts, and teaches us, helping us discern God's will for our lives.

Prayer

Through prayer, we maintain ongoing communication with God, seeking His guidance and expressing our dependence on Him.

The Security of Following Jesus

One of the most comforting aspects of following Jesus is the security He provides. In John 10:28-29, He promises: "I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand."

This creates a beautiful picture of double security—we are held in Jesus' hands, and the Father holds Jesus. This divine protection ensures that true followers of Christ cannot be lost.

Walking Christ's Narrow Path

Following Jesus often means choosing a different path than the world offers. While the world provides a "superhighway" that seems appealing to many, Christ calls us to walk on His narrow pathway. This requires discernment to avoid being "taken captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ" (Colossians 2:8).

Life Application

Following Jesus is not a passive activity—it requires daily, intentional choices to align your life with His will and purposes. This week, commit to deepening your relationship with Christ by actively listening for His voice through Scripture reading, prayer, and Spirit-led living.

Consider these questions as you reflect on what it means to follow Jesus:

  • Am I truly listening for Jesus' voice in my daily decisions, or am I relying on my own understanding?
  • What areas of my life need to be surrendered more fully to Christ's lordship?
  • How can I better "take up my cross daily" and follow Jesus in practical ways?
  • Am I walking on Christ's narrow path, or have I been influenced by worldly philosophies and values?

Remember, following Jesus begins with saying "yes" to His invitation of salvation, but it continues with daily choices to live under His guidance and authority. As you grow in your relationship with Him, you'll discover that the more you learn to walk with Him in His power, the more beautiful He becomes.
